RESUMO

Permeabilities of various trace elements (TEs) through the blood-follicle barrier (BFB) play an important role in oocyte development. However, it has not been comprehensively described as well as its involved biological pathways. Our study aimed to construct a blood-follicle distribution model of the concerned TEs and explore their related biological pathways. We finally included a total of 168 women from a cohort of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer conducted in two reproductive centers in Beijing City and Shandong Province, China. The concentrations of 35 TEs in both serum and follicular fluid (FF) samples from the 168 women were measured, as well as the multiomics features of the metabolome, lipidome, and proteome in both plasma and FF samples. Multiomics features associated with the transfer efficiencies of TEs through the BFB were selected by using an elastic net model and further utilized for pathway analysis. Various machine learning (ML) models were built to predict the concentrations of TEs in FF. Overall, there are 21 TEs that exhibited three types of consistent BFB distribution characteristics between Beijing and Shandong centers. Among them, the concentrations of arsenic, manganese, nickel, tin, and bismuth in FF were higher than those in the serum with transfer efficiencies of 1.19-4.38, while a reverse trend was observed for the 15 TEs with transfer efficiencies of 0.076-0.905, e.g., mercury, germanium, selenium, antimony, and titanium. Lastly, cadmium was evenly distributed in the two compartments with transfer efficiencies of 0.998-1.056. Multiomics analysis showed that the enrichment of TEs was associated with the synthesis and action of steroid hormones and the glucose metabolism. Random forest model can provide the most accurate predictions of the concentrations of TEs in FF among the concerned ML models. In conclusion, the selective permeability through the BFB for various TEs may be significantly regulated by the steroid hormones and the glucose metabolism. Also, the concentrations of some TEs in FF can be well predicted by their serum levels with a random forest model.

What is added by this report?: We evaluated the variations in maternal plasma Mo concentrations throughout pregnancy and their potential association with the risk of spontaneous preterm birth (SPB). What are the implications for public health practice?: Future research must determine the Mo levels in pregnant women across various regions in China. Moreover, particular attention needs to be given to the potential increase in Mo concentration throughout pregnancy and its possible adverse impacts on the health of both the mother and the fetus.

Close relationships exist between metal(loid)s exposure and embryo implantation failure (EIF) from animal and epidemiological studies. However, there are still inconsistent results and lacking of sensitive metal(loid) exposure biomarkers associated with EIF risk. We aimed to ascertain sensitive metal(loid) biomarkers to EIF and provide potential biological explanations. Candidate metal(loid) biomarkers were measured in the female hair (FH), female serum (FS), and follicular fluid (FF) with various exposure time periods. An analytical framework was established by integrating epidemiological association results, comprehensive literature searching, and knowledge-based adverse outcome pathway (AOP) networks. The sensitive biomarkers of metal(loid)s along with potential biological pathways to EIF were identified in this framework. Among the concerned 272 candidates, 45 metal(loid)s biomarkers across six time periods and three biomatrix were initially identified by single-metal(loid) analyses. Two biomarkers with counterfactual results according to literature summary results were excluded, and a total of five biomarkers were further determined from 43 remained candidates in mixture models. Finally, four sensitive metal(loid) biomarkers were eventually assessed by overlapping AOP networks information, including Se and Co in FH, and Fe and Zn in FS. AOP networks also identified key GO pathways and proteins involved in regulation of oxygen species biosynthetic, cell proliferation, and inflammatory response. Partial dependence results revealed Fe in FS and Co in FH at their low levels might be potential sensitive exposure levels for EIF. Our study provided a typical framework to screen the crucial metal(loid) biomarkers and ascertain that Se and Co in FH, and Fe and Zn in FS played an important role in embryo implantation.

The China Undergraduate Cohort (CUC) is an ambispective cohort study with its major purpose to better understand the effects of lifetime environmental exposures on health outcomes. We recruited 5322 college students with an average age of 18.3 ± 0.7 years in China from August 23, 2019 to October 28, 2019. Follow-up surveys were conducted annually. The dataset comprises individual demographic data (e.g. age, sex, height, weight, birth date, race, home address, annual family income, contact information), health-related behavior data (smoking status, smoking cessation, passive smoking exposure, drinking habit, physical activity, dietary status), lifestyle data (physical exercise, dietary habit, length of time spent outdoors), disease history (respiratory disease history, cardiovascular disease history, urinary system disease history, etc.), mental health status data (sleep quality, self-reported stress, anxiety and depression symptoms), lung function and blood samples data. Preliminary results from our cohort have found the association between air pollution, summer heat and mercury exposure and lung function among young adults in China.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence is appearing that ozone has adverse effects on health. However, the association between long-term ozone exposure and lung function is still inconclusive. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the associations between long-term exposure to ozone and lung function in Chinese young adults. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study among 1594 college students with a mean age of 19.2 years at baseline in Shandong, China from September 2020 to September 2021. Lung function indicators were measured in September 2020 and September 2021, including forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced expiratory flow at the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentile of the FVC (FEF25, FEF50, and FEF75) and mean flow rate between 25% and 75% of the FVC (FEF25-75) were measured. Daily 10 km×10 km ozone concentrations come from a well-validated data-fusion approach. The time-weighted average concentrations in 12 months before the lung function test were defined as the long-term ozone exposure. The associations between long-term ozone exposure and lung function indicators in Chinese young adults were investigated using a linear mixed effects model, followed by stratified analyses regarding sex, BMI and history of respiratory diseases. RESULTS: Each interquartile range (IQR) (8.9 µg/m3) increase in long-term ozone exposure were associated with a -204.3 (95% confidence interval (CI): -361.6, -47.0) ml/s, -146.3 (95% CI: -264.1, -28.4) ml/s, and - 132.8 (95% CI: -239.2, -26.4) ml/s change in FEF25, FEF50, and FEF25-75, respectively. Stronger adverse associations were found in female participants or those with BMI ≥ 24 kg/m2 and history of respiratory diseases. CONCLUSION: Long-term exposure to ambient ozone is associated with impaired small airway indicators in Chinese young adults. Females, participants with BMI ≥ 24 kg/m2 and a history of respiratory disease have stronger associations.

Introduction: Spontaneous preterm birth (SPB) is a significant cause of neonatal mortality, yet its etiology remains unclear. Cobalt, an essential trace element, might be a risk factor for SPB. This study aims to investigate the relationship between maternal serum cobalt concentration and SPB, and to clarify the role of blood lipids and fasting blood glucose (FBG) in this relationship. Methods: We conducted a nested case-control study within the Beijing Birth Cohort Study. Serum samples were obtained from 222 pregnant women with SPB and 224 controls during the first (7-13 weeks of pregnancy) and third trimesters (32-42 weeks of pregnancy). Serum cobalt concentration was determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Fasting blood glucose and lipids levels were detected using a fully automated biochemical immunoassay instrument. Logistic regression models and linear regression models were established to explore the association between serum cobalt concentration and the risk of SPB in pregnant women, and to test the mediating effect of fasting blood glucose (FBG) and lipids. Results: We found that the serum cobalt concentration in mothers with SPB and controls was similar in the first trimester, with values of 0.79 (0.58-1.10) ng/mL and 0.75 (0.51-1.07) ng/mL, respectively. However, in the third trimester, the cobalt concentration increased to 0.88 (0.59-1.14) ng/mL and 0.84 (0.52-1.19) ng/mL, respectively. In the logistic regression model, when considering the third trimester of pregnancy, after adjusting for ethnicity, pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), maternal age, education, income, and parity, it was observed that the medium level of cobalt concentration (0.63-1.07 ng/ml) had a negative correlation with the risk of SPB. The odds ratio (OR) was 0.56, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.34-0.90 ng/mL and a p-value of 0.02. This suggests that cobalt in this concentration range played a protective role against SPB. Additionally, it was found that FBG in the third trimester of pregnancy had a partial intermediary role, accounting for 9.12% of the association. However, no relationship between cobalt and SPB risk was found in the first trimester. Conclusion: During the third trimester, intermediate levels of maternal cobalt appear to offer protection against SPB, with FBG playing a partial mediating role. To further clarify the optimal cobalt concentrations during pregnancy for different populations, a multi-center study with a larger sample size is necessary. Additionally, exploring the specific mechanism of FBG's mediating role could provide valuable insights for improving the prevention of SPB.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between Cd exposure and depressive symptoms in Chinese young adults. And to investigate the potential metabolic changes associated with high blood Cd concentrations. METHODS: We conducted a cohort study in 2019 and 2021. Blood Cd and depressive symptoms were collected during baseline and follow-up. The nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) scores were used to assess depressive symptoms. We used the generalized linear mixed model to estimate the association between blood Cd levels and depressive symptoms. A metabolomic and lipidomic analysis based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was conducted on a total of 679 blood samples. The metabolomic data were analyzed using variance analysis and linear mixed effects models. RESULTS: Blood Cd concentrations were significantly associated with increased severity of depression symptoms [odds ratio (OR) 2.07, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.04-4.11]. Metabolomics analysis found 93 metabolites with significant statistical differences between the lowest blood Cd level group and the highest Cd level group. Among the 93 differential metabolites, 17 were enriched in 7 differential metabolic pathways. CONCLUSIONS: Blood Cd was associated with increased severity of depression symptoms in Chinese young adults. Cd exposure may affect depressive symptoms by inducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and disrupting amino acid metabolism.

The etiology of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) has been associated with levels of trace elements in the human body. The source of trace elements in the human body may be rare earth elements (REEs). Our study aimed to identify the potential relationship between t REEs in blood and brain samples and depression from two paths: animal experiments and population studies. In the animal experiments, 35 adult Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly allocated to the control group (n = 14) and treatment group (n = 21), which received the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) procedure for four weeks and further categorized into the sensitive group (n = 9) and resilient group (n = 12) by sucrose water preference test. Then, all rats were executed to obtain serum and brain tissue samples. We also recruited 197 participants and divided them into the major depressive disorder (MDD) group (n = 100) and the control group (n = 97) then serum samples were collected for REEs detection. Our finding reported that significant differences were found in the levels of La and Ce in blood samples from different groups in the CUMS rat model (sensitive group < resilient group < control group) (all p < 0.05), with similar patterns for other elements (Pr, Nd, and Y) (but p > 0.5). No significant inter-group difference was reported in rat brain tissue samples. After adjusting for demographic variables, we found that the concentrations of all five REEs (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Y) were lower in depression group than in control group (all p < 0.01). The current conjoint animal and human data supported appropriate levels of REEs have a certain protective effect on body health. These results may be attributed to Hormesis effects. Whether the possible favorable effects of REEs on improving symptoms of depression or can be applied to drug development remains to be further investigated.

BACKGROUND: Parental exposure to rare earth elements (REEs) could increase the risk of premature rupture of membranes, a major cause of spontaneous preterm birth (SPB). In addition, different subtypes of SPB, such as spontaneous preterm labor (SPL) and preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), may have different susceptibility to environmental exposure. Therefore, we investigated the potential associations between REE exposure in different trimesters and SPB and its subtypes. METHODS: A nested case-control study was performed. We included 244 women with SPB as cases and 244 women with full-term delivery as controls. The plasma concentrations of light REEs were measured in the first and third trimesters. Logistic regression was used to analyze the associations between single REE levels and SPB, and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) was used to analyze the mixed-exposure effect. RESULTS: Exposure to light REEs was associated with SPB and its subtypes only in the third trimester. Specifically, the intermediate- and highest-tertile concentration groups of La and the highest-tertile concentration group of Sm were associated with an increased risk of SPL, with adjusted odds ratios (AORs) of 2.00 (95% CIs: 1.07-3.75), 1.87 (95% CIs: 1.01-3.44), and 1.82 (95% CIs: 1.00-3.30), respectively. The highest-tertile concentration group of Pr was associated with an increased risk of PPROM, with an AOR of 1.69 (95% CIs: 1.00-2.85). Similar results were also found in BKMR models. CONCLUSIONS: La and Sm levels in plasma may be associated with the risk of SPL, and Pr levels in plasma may be associated with the risk of PPROM.

The content of single heavy metal in blood is associated with lung function decline, but there is little evidence on the joint effect of multiple heavy metals on lung function. To explore whether heavy metal mixture exposure is associated with lung function reduction among young adults. The study based on a cohort of 518 students recruited from a college in Shandong, China. We measured their lung function and blood heavy metal concentrations. The BKMR model was used to analyse the association between blood heavy metals mixture levels and lung function, and to identify the critical single heavy metal which contributes most to joint effects. As the sensitivity analysis, we used quantile g-computation model and GLM to explore the joint effect and independent effects of heavy metals. Our findings revealed a significant reduction of FVC and FEV1 levels after exposure to heavy metals mixture. An IQR increase in Cu was associated with a 0.079 L and 0.083 L decrease in FEV1 and FVC, respectively. And an IQR increase in Fe was associated with 0.036 L higher FEV1 and 0.033 L higher FVC. For adults, reducing blood heavy metals concentration might be an effective intervention to protect lung function.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most worldwide commonly found malignancy among women. The evidence for lipidomic studies of breast cancer in the Chinese population is relatively limited. OBJECTIVE: Our current study aimed to identify peripheral lipids capable of distinguishing adults with and without malignant breast cancer in a Chinese population and to explore the potential lipid metabolism pathways implicated in breast cancer. METHODS: Lipidomics was performed with an Ultimate 3000 UHPLC system coupled with a Q-Exactive HF MS platform by using the serum of 71 female patients with malignant breast cancer and 92 age-matched (± 2 years) healthy women. The data were uploaded to and processed by the specialized online software Metaboanalyst 5.0. Both univariate and multivariate analyses were carried out for potential biomarker screening. Areas under the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves (AUCs) of identified differential lipids were obtained for evaluating their classification capacity. RESULTS: A total of 47 significantly different lipids were identified by applying the following criteria: false discovery rate-adjusted P < 0.05, variable importance in projection ⩾ 1.0, and fold change ⩾ 2.0 or ⩽ 0.5. Among them, 13 lipids were identified as diagnostic biomarkers with the area under curve (AUC) greater than 0.7. Multivariate ROC curves indicated that AUCs greater than 0.8 could be achieved with 2-47 lipids. CONCLUSIONS: Using an untargeted LC-MS-based metabolic profiling approach, our study provides preliminary evidence that extensive dysregulations of OxPCs, PCs, SMs and TAGs were involved in the pathological processes of breast cancer. We provided clues for furtherly investigating the role of lipid alterations in the pathoetiology of breast cancer.

The trace element selenium, which is found in selenoproteins, plays an antioxidant role in preventing muscle tissue injury. A positive association between selenium concentrations and hand grip strength has been reported in older adults; however, the evidence of this association is scarce in general adults. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the association between blood selenium concentrations and low hand grip strength using the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2012 and 2013-2014 in the United States (US). Logistic regression was used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) of low hand grip strength, with blood selenium level adjusted for potential confounders. Among 8158 adults (women: 51.59%) with a mean age of 47 (range: 18-80) years, women and non-Hispanic Blacks tended to have low blood selenium concentrations. Notably, participants with high blood selenium concentrations (range, 178.1-192.5 µg/L) were more likely to have a low risk of low hand grip strength after adjusting for the potential covariates (OR: 0.60, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.38-0.95) than those with low blood selenium concentrations. After excluding participants with chronic diseases, high blood selenium concentrations were found to be associated with a low risk of low hand grip strength (OR: 0.30, 95% CI: 0.14-0.65). A J-shaped relationship was found between selenium concentrations and low hand grip strength (P for nonlinear trend <0.0001). Subgroup analyses revealed a significantly consistent relationship among women, non-Hispanic Whites and others, and individuals with overweight or obesity (P < 0.05). Our study suggests that blood selenium concentrations are inversely associated with hand grip strength in general US adults. However, further prospective studies are required to confirm the causality between selenium concentrations and hand grip strength.

We performed this study to clarify the dynamic changes in maternal manganese (Mn) concentration during pregnancy and its association with spontaneous preterm birth (SPB). A nested case-control study was conducted based on the Beijing Birth Cohort Study (BBCS) from 2018 to 2020. Singleton pregnancy women aged 18-44 (n = 488) were involved in the study, including 244 cases of SPB and 244 controls. All of the participants provided blood samples twice (in their first and third trimesters). Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used for the laboratory analysis, and unconditional logistic regression was used for the statistical analysis. We found that the maternal Mn levels were significantly higher in the third trimester than those in the first trimester (median: 1.23 vs. 0.81 ng/mL). The SPB risk was increased to 1.65 (95% CI: 1.04-2.62, p = 0.035) in the highest Mn level (third tertile) in the third trimester, especially in normal-weight women (OR: 2.07, 95% CI: 1.18-3.61, p = 0.011) or non-premature rupture of membrane (PROM) women (OR: 3.93, 95% CI: 2.00-7.74, p < 0.001). Moreover, a dose-dependent relationship exists between the SPB risk and maternal Mn concentration in non-PROM women (P trend < 0.001). In conclusion, dynamic monitoring of maternal Mn level during pregnancy would be helpful for SPB prevention, especially in normal-weight and non-PROM women.

BACKGROUND: Mercury has been associated with many adverse health outcomes. However, limited studies have explored the association between blood mercury concentrations and lung function. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between blood mercury concentrations and lung function among young adults. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study among 1800 college students based on the Chinese Undergraduates Cohort in Shandong, China during August 2019 and September 2020. Lung function indicators including forced vital capacity (FVC, ml), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1, ml) and peak expiratory flow (PEF, ml) were collected with a spirometers (Chestgraph Jr. HI-101, Chest M.I., Tokyo, Japan). The blood mercury concentration was measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. We divided participants into low (≤25 percentiles), intermediate (25-75 percentiles), and high (≥75 percentile) subgroups according to blood mercury concentrations. The multiple linear regression model was used to examine the associations between blood mercury concentrations and lung function changes. Stratification analyses by sex and fish consumption frequency were also conducted. RESULTS: The results showed that each 2-fold increase in blood mercury concentrations was significantly associated with -70.75 ml [95 % confidence interval (CI): -122.35, -19.15] change in FVC, -72.68 ml (95%CI: -120.36, -25.00) in FEV1, and -158.06 ml (95%CI: -283.77, -32.35) in PEF. The effect was more pronounced among participants with high blood mercury and male participants. Participants who consumed fish more than once a week more likely to be affected by mercury. CONCLUSION: Our study indicated that blood mercury was significantly associated with decreased lung function in young adults. It is necessary to implement corresponding measures to reduce the effect of mercury on the respiratory system, especially for men and people who consumed fish more than once a week.

Previous studies have found associations between chromium exposure and skin damage. However, few studies have focused on both chromium and skin aging. This study aimed to assess the degree of skin aging symptoms and estimate the relationship between hair chromium and skin aging among rural housewives. We recruited 405 subjects in Shanxi Province of northern China and analyzed 397 eligible hair samples with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The subjects' skin aging symptoms were assessed with SCINEXA™ (SCore of INtrinsic and EXtrinsic skin Aging). After adjusting for age and other important covariates, the regression results showed more severe skin aging symptoms in women with a higher level of hair chromium and presented an increasing linear trend. Vegetables, fruits, and beans might be a source of chromium exposure. We concluded that skin aging might be positively associated with hair chromium. It is necessary to take measures to reduce chromium exposure to prevent skin aging.

This case-control study explored the associations between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the serum concentration of nine chemical elements in children. The study recruited 92 Chinese children with ASD and 103 typically developing individuals. Serum concentrations of nine chemical elements (calcium, iodine, iron, lithium, magnesium, potassium, selenium, strontium, and zinc) were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). An unconditional logistic regression model was used to analyze the associations between the serum concentrations of the elements and the risk of ASD. After adjusting for confounders, the multivariate analysis results showed that zinc ≤ 837.70 ng/mL, potassium > 170.06 µg/mL, and strontium ≤ 52.46 ng/mL were associated with an increased risk of ASD, while selenium > 159.80 ng/mL was associated with a decreased risk of ASD. Furthermore, the degree of lithium and zinc deficiency was associated with ASD severity. The results indicated that metallomic profiles of some specific elements might play important roles in the development of ASD, a finding of scientific significance for understanding the etiology, and providing dietary guidance for certain ASD types.

BACKGROUND: Passive smoking may increase the content of heavy metals in housewives. However, this association remains a subject of debate. Female passive smoking is widespread, particularly in Chinese rural areas. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the association between heavy metal accumulation and passive smoking status among rural housewives. METHODS: 405 women were recruited in Shanxi Province of Northern China, and 384 (94.8%, 384/405) participants were included in the final study, of whom 117 women were exposed to passive smoking. The information on their basic characteristics was collected via a structured questionnaire. We used inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to analyze the concentrations of nine heavy metals, including cadmium (Cd), germanium (Ge), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), titanium (Ti), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), and chromium (Cr), in hair samples. RESULTS: The results indicated that higher As, Ge, Ti, and Fe concentrations were significantly associated with passive smoking. After adjusting for potential confounders, the adjusted odds ratios and the 95% confidence intervals of As, Ge, Ti, and Fe were (1.80 (1.13-2.90), p = 0.028), (1.78 (1.14-2.80), p = 0.007), (1.70 (1.09-2.67), p = 0.019), and (1.67 (1.07-2.63), p = 0.035), respectively. The statistically significant linear trend of the adjusted odds ratios at different levels further supported their association. CONCLUSION: Our research concluded that exposure to environmental tobacco smoke might contribute to As, Ge, Ti, and Fe accumulation among housewives.

BACKGROUND: The single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the fatty acid desaturases and elongases might associate with the endogenous synthesis of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). However, the related epidemiological evidence is still conflicting. So we aimed to clearly evaluate the interactions between maternal DHA-rich n-3 PUFAs supplementation and the known 26 SNPs on the profiles of PUFAs in the colostrum using a Chinese birth cohort. METHODS: Totally, 1050 healthy mother-infant pairs were enrolled in this study at gestational 6-8 weeks when they established their pregnancy files at Fuxing Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University in Beijing from January to December 2018. Meanwhile, their venous blood samples were obtained for DNA extraction to detect the genotypes of SNPs in the Fads1, Fads2, Fads3, Elovl2 and Elovl5 using the Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry. Then the colostrum samples were collected to determine the profiles of PUFAs by gas chromatography. RESULTS: Maternal DHA-rich n-3 PUFAs supplementation from the early and middle pregnancy could reduce the infant BMI at birth, and impact the profiles of PUFAs in the colostrum, as higher n-3 PUFAs (EPA, DHA, DHA/ALA and DHA/EPA), lower n-6 PUFAs (AA and AA/LA) and ∑-6/n-3ΣPUFAs. Moreover, there were significant correlations between multiple SNPs and the profiles of n-6 PUFAs (rs76996928 for LA, rs174550, rs174553 and rs174609 for AA, rs174550 and rs76996928 for AA/LA) and n-3 PUFAs in the colostrum (rs174448, rs174537, rs174550, rs174553, rs174598, rs3168072, rs174455 and rs174464 for ALA, rs174550, rs174553 and rs174598 for EPA, rs174455 and rs174464 for DHA, rs174448 and rs3168072 for DHA/EPA) using the multiple linear regressions by adjusting the maternal age, gestational week, mode of delivery, infant sex and BMI at birth, and all these above significant SNPs had the cumulative effects on the profiles of PUFAs. Furthermore, the pairwise comparisons also showed the meaningful interactions between maternal DHA-rich n-3 PUFAs supplementation and related genotypes of SNPs (rs76996928 for LA, rs174598 for EPA, rs174448 for DHA and DHA/EPA) on the contents of PUFAs in the colostrum. CONCLUSIONS: Results from this birth cohort study proved that the pregnant women with the following SNPs such as Fads3 rs174455 T, Fads3 rs174464 A and Fads1 rs174448 G alleles should pay more attention on their exogenous DHA supplementation from the early and middle pregnancy for the blocked endogenous synthesis. BACKGROUND: Rare earth elements (REEs) are emerging contaminants. Previous studies reported the association between REEs and active smoking, but little is known about the effects of passive smoking on this condition. In China, female passive smoking is widespread, particularly in rural areas. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to estimate the relationship between REEs accumulation and passive smoking among rural housewives. METHODS: We recruited 385 subjects in Shanxi Province of northern China, of whom 117 housewives were exposed to passive smoking, and 268 were not. We analyzed 15 REEs in the hair of housewives with ICP-MS, including lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium, and yttrium. RESULTS: The results indicated higher levels of 14 REEs except for Sm in both the univariate and adjusted models among the housewives exposed to passive smoking. The increasing linear trend of adjusted odds ratios of 15 REEs supported their association. The Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models showed that 15 REEs had a significant overall effect, and Eu had a single-exposure effect with passive smoking. CONCLUSION: We concluded that passive smoking might be associated with increased exposure to REEs among rural housewives.

Trace elements have various physiochemical functions in humans and are associated with the occurrence of preterm birth (PB). However, their mixed effects on PB risk have rarely been studied. We aimed to investigate the associations between hair levels of trace elements and PB risk among pregnant women. A nested case-control study with a prospective cohort was conducted in Beijing City, China. We included 82 women who had a PB [total PB (tPB)] as cases [including 40 with a spontaneous PB (SPB)] and 415 who had a term delivery as controls. Hair levels of the concerned trace elements were measured including endocrine disrupting metal(loid)s [EDMs; lead, mercury (Hg), arsenic, and cadmium] and nutritional trace metal(loid)s [NTMs; zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), copper, and selenium]. Logistic regression analysis was performed to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) for PB. Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) was used to assess the associations between mixed exposure to the trace elements and PB risk. Significantly lower maternal hair concentrations of Zn and Fe were observed in the SPB cases than in the controls, whereas no differences for the other trace elements. Single-element modeling results suggested second-quartile Hg maternal hair concentrations, third-quartile Zn concentrations, and fourth-quartile Fe concentrations were associated with a reduced risk of tPB with adjusted ORs of 0.43 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.21-0.87], 0.38 (95% CI: 0.18-0.82), and 0.48 (95% CI: 0.24-0.98), respectively, compared to first-quartile values. Similar results were obtained for SPB. According to the BKMR models, hair NTMs were significantly, monotonously, and inversely associated with the risk of SPB, after controlling for covariates and levels of the four EDMs. Fe and Zn contributed the most strongly to the association. We concluded that maternal higher levels of NTMs, especially Fe and Zn, may reduce the risk of PB.
